Observe
Children notice the details of village life, nature and everyday craft — things a classroom can only describe in pictures.
Gaon-Ghar is a village-based experiential learning initiative in Himachal Pradesh. We bring school children out of the classroom and into real village life — where learning happens by living it.
Who We Are
Gaon-Ghar began with one idea: children learn more deeply when they can observe, participate and live within the environment they are studying. That idea became The Himalayan Classroom — our village-based learning programme for school students from Chandigarh, Punjab and nearby regions.
Each batch is deliberately small: 20 children with 2 teachers, staying in the village of Shankar Dehra for 5 nights and 6 days. Children take part in traditional skills like wool work and rope making, share authentic Himachali meals, walk village trails, learn about local plants, and spend their evenings with Pahari stories, bonfires and the Himalayan night sky.
We are not a travel company selling a tour. We are an educational programme that happens to take place in a village — with real people, real places, real activities and real learning.
Our Philosophy
Every day in the village follows the same simple rhythm.
Children notice the details of village life, nature and everyday craft — things a classroom can only describe in pictures.
They join daily activities guided by local knowledge holders, from wool work to food traditions.
Every evening closes with shared questions, stories and learning — turning experience into understanding.
Our Values
The principles behind every batch, every activity and every interaction.
Children learn by participating, not by watching from a distance.
Local families and knowledge holders are part of the programme, not a backdrop to it.
Forests, plants, trails and the night sky are part of the curriculum.
20 children per batch with 2 teachers, designed around supervision and risk awareness.
We work with the village — creating participation and livelihood opportunities for local families.
Traditional Himachali skills, food and culture are shared with respect.
Rooted in the Community
The Himalayan Classroom is designed as a responsible rural-tourism model. Local participation is part of the learning experience — rather than treating the village only as a backdrop. Every batch is built to create value for the community that hosts it.
We would love to walk you through The Himalayan Classroom — the programme, the village, the people and the plan.
